 2017 Preview 


       Sipsey Valley finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Sipsey Valley finished seventh in Class 4A region four with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Bears lost as many games as in any season since 2010. The Bears have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017.

       Sipsey Valley struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.5 points a game.

       The Bears would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Sipsey Valley football program has struggled with a record of 18-54.

       The Bears are led by head coach Scott Marchant who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 3-17 over the past two seasons at Sipsey Valley. The Bears have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Marchant.

       Coach Marchant's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 37-50 (42.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Marchant's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship.

       The Sipsey Valley Bears will play in Class 4A region four during the 2017 season.

       The Bears enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       It will be an uphill battle for the Bears if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just a single win last year, Sipsey Valley will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

       The Bears open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Winfield on Thursday, August 24. Last year the Winfield Pirates finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 4A region six. The Pirates lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Cherokee County by a score of 29-22.

       Sipsey Valley and Winfield have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bears have a 0-2-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2016 with Winfield winning by a score of 40-15.
